Here's how to protect it.
How Concentration Breaks
- You're incapacitated or die. Obviously.
- You fail a Con save triggered by damage. DC = 10 or half damage dealt (whichever higher).
- You cast another concentration spell. The new spell replaces the old.
- An environmental effect (being forced underwater, some spells).
The Con Save Math
DC = 10 + damage / 2, or just 10 if damage < 20.
- Taking 5 damage: DC 10 save. Con +1 with proficiency = +4. Need 6+. 75% pass.
- Taking 20 damage: DC 10 save. Same math.
- Taking 40 damage: DC 20 save. Need 16+. 25% pass.
- Taking 80 damage: DC 40 save. Near-impossible.
Small hits = easy saves. Big hits = concentration in danger.
Protecting Concentration
War Caster Feat
- Advantage on concentration saves.
- Cast spells as opportunity attacks.
- +no stat bonus, but huge effective bonus.
Best feat for spellcasters who want concentration.
Resilient (Constitution) Feat
- +1 Con.

When to Drop Concentration Voluntarily
Drop concentration if:
- You need to cast a new concentration spell. The new replaces the old.
- The current effect is over. Spike Growth's enemies are dead. Drop it.
- You're about to be in a situation where holding concentration is impossible (taking massive damage imminently).
Voluntary drop is free. No action cost.
Multi-Concentration Workarounds
You can only concentrate on one spell. Workarounds to get "two concentration effects":
- Have an ally concentrate on another spell. Bard Inspires while you Bless. Two effects.
- Use non-concentration spells that mimic concentration effects. Spiritual Weapon doesn't concentration. Produce Flame doesn't concentration.
- Layer a non-concentration spell with a concentration spell. Bless (concentration) + Spiritual Weapon (non) is a Cleric classic.
Breaking Enemy Concentration
If the enemy has a concentration spell up (big buff, control), break it:
- Deal damage. Force Con saves.
- Use Counterspell on their cast.
- Incapacitate them. Paralyzed / stunned = automatic concentration break.
- Hit them hard. One big hit forces a save.
