D&D 5e Action Surge timing. When to fire, how to maximize damage, and the best combos with Fighter subclasses.
Action Surge 5e: When to Use the Fighter's Big Button
Action Surge is the Fighter's signature feature. Once per short rest (twice at level 17), you take an additional action on your turn.
It's a massive burst tool. Using it well is the difference between Fighter DPR and dominance.
The Core Mechanic
On your turn, after your normal action, use Action Surge to take another action. You can use it for:
- Attack (with your Extra Attack if applicable).
- Cast a spell (Eldritch Knight).
- Dash / Disengage / Dodge / Hide / Use an Object.
Most Fighters use it for Attack.
Attack Surge Math
At level 5 with Extra Attack:
- Normal action: 2 attacks.
- Action Surge: 2 additional attacks.
- Total: 4 attacks on your surge turn.
At level 11 with 3 attacks:
- Normal: 3 attacks.
- Surge: 3 more.
- Total: 6.
At level 20 with 4 attacks:
- Normal: 4.
- Surge: 4 more.
- Total: 8.
That's eight attacks in one turn at max level. Incredible burst.
When to Use Action Surge
- Opening a boss fight. Nova damage on turn 1.
- Finishing a boss. If your target is low HP, burst through it.
- Maximizing an Advantage opportunity. If you have advantage on all your attacks (from Reckless Attack, Hold Person, etc.), Surge is a crit fishing bonanza.
- Clearing multiple enemies. Extra attacks can target different creatures.
When Not to Use Action Surge
- Against weak enemies. Don't nova a goblin.
- Early in a fight without a good target. Save for the moment.
- If you can't take the short rest to recover it. Be aware of your day's encounter pace.
Combining Action Surge with Other Features
Champion Fighter + Action Surge
Champion's expanded crit range (19-20 at level 3, 18-20 at 15) compounds with more attacks. More attacks = more crit chances.
Battle Master Fighter + Action Surge
Extra attacks mean extra Maneuver triggers. Trip Attack twice, Riposte available next turn, extra Precision Attack chances.
Eldritch Knight + Action Surge
Cast a spell (action) + two weapon attacks (bonus action via War Magic at high level) + Action Surge for more attacks. Big compound damage.
Paladin (Multiclass) + Action Surge
Paladin Smite + Fighter Action Surge = six smites in one turn. Nova burst.
Short Rests
Action Surge recovers on short rest. Two short rests per day = two Surge fights.
For solo play, short rest between encounters when possible. Refresh your Surge.
Solo Action Surge
Solo Fighters use Action Surge as their "pick your nova moment" button. One boss per adventuring day gets the surge treatment.
Plan ahead:
- Identify which encounter is the most important.
- Save Action Surge for it.
- Deliver the burst.
- Short rest after.
The Endlessness and Action Surge
Our AI Dungeon Master handles Action Surge: the additional action, the short rest recovery, the usage counter. When you say "I Action Surge and attack again," the system applies the extra attacks.
