Human 5e: The Complete Species Guide
D&D 5e Human species guide. Standard vs Variant Human, best class combos, when +1 to all stats beats a racial feat, and why Humans are still a top pick.
Human 5e: The Complete Species Guide
The Human is the species people pick when they can't decide. Which is also the species people pick when they've played D&D for years and know exactly what they want. It's both the most-popular-by-default and the most-popular-after-optimization. That's how flexible it is.
This guide covers when to pick Human, which variant of Human to choose, and how to pair Human with classes to get the most out of the pick.
Standard Human
The base Human gets:
- +1 to every ability score.
- Age: Normal adult (20-ish) to 80s lifespan.
- Size: Medium.
- Speed: 30 feet.
- Languages: Common + one extra.
That's it. No darkvision. No racial skills. No magical feature. Just flat +1 to all six ability scores.
This is less boring than it looks. On point buy or standard array, +1 to all six means your dump stat goes from 8 to 9, your 15 Wisdom goes to 16 (crossing the modifier threshold), and every stat gets better. Rolling stats? Same story, every number is 1 better.
For many classes, having a secondary stat slightly improved helps more than a specific racial bonus. A Paladin wants both Strength and Charisma high. Standard Human delivers on both without forcing a race specialized in one.
Variant Human
The Variant Human (optional rule, but widely used and supported in The Endlessness) gets:
- +1 to two different ability scores of your choice.
- One skill proficiency of your choice.
- One feat of your choice.
- All other Human traits.
The feat at level 1 is huge. A level 1 Variant Human is often effectively a level 2 character of another species. Great Weapon Master, Sharpshooter, Crossbow Expert, Lucky, Tough, Resilient, War Caster, Alert. Any of these at level 1 is a massive jump start.
For optimizers, Variant Human is often the strongest race in the game. For flavor players, it's still great, just less mechanically focused.
Which to Pick
Standard Human is better for:
- New players who don't want to choose feats yet.
- Characters who want all six stats balanced.
- Classes that need many stats (Monk, Ranger, Paladin).
- Flavor-forward builds that don't need a feat early.
Variant Human is better for:
- Characters with a clear build plan (e.g., "I want Great Weapon Master at level 1").
- Classes that benefit from a specific feat early (anything that wants Crossbow Expert, Sharpshooter, or Polearm Master).
- Players who know the feats and want to front-load.
Class Combos
Human + Paladin. Variant Human with Polearm Master and a glaive. Or Standard Human to boost both Strength and Charisma at character creation. Both work.
Human + Barbarian. Variant Human with Great Weapon Master at level 1. Start a Barbarian with a greataxe and GWM, feel unstoppable.
Human + Fighter. Variant Human with Sharpshooter for ranged, or Polearm Master for melee. Fighters also get more ASIs than anyone, so the early feat compounds.
Human + Wizard. Variant Human with War Caster or Resilient (Constitution) for concentration. Or Standard Human to boost Int + Dex + Con simultaneously.
Human + Ranger. Variant Human with Crossbow Expert + hand crossbow. Extra attack without Extra Attack.
Human + Bard. Variant Human with Lucky for social rerolls, or Inspiring Leader if you're going full party support.
Human + Cleric. Standard Human balances Wis + Str/Dex + Con. Great for Life Domain.
Role-Play Flavor
Humans lack specific racial traits, but that's a roleplay opportunity. Your Human can be from anywhere, any culture, any background. Without built-in lore, you're free to define them entirely.
Cultural backgrounds can come from your Background choice (Soldier, Sage, Folk Hero, etc.). See our character creation guide for more on backgrounds.
Human in Solo Play
Humans work well solo because the stat boost helps wherever you put it. A solo character often needs more stats than a party character (since you're covering every role), and Standard Human gives you a +1 everywhere.
Variant Human is even stronger solo, since an early feat can massively shape your build. Tough (+HP), Resilient Constitution (concentration), or Lucky (rerolls) are particularly strong for solo survivability.
Final Verdict
Pick Standard Human if you want balanced stats and classic fantasy vibes. Pick Variant Human if you know the feat you want and want to front-load.
Either way, Human is never a wrong pick. It's the safest optimization choice and one of the most flexible thematic choices. Start a Human on The Endlessness with whatever class you're curious about.
