How to Build a Healer in D&D 5e

D&D 5e healer build guide. Best classes for healing, bonus action heals, Aura of Vitality, and how to support a party or yourself effectively.

How to Build a Healer in D&D 5e

Healers keep parties alive. Whether you're supporting a group or healing yourself solo, knowing how to build a healer is core D&D knowledge.

Core Healer Principles

  1. Bonus action healing. Cure Wounds is an action. Healing Word is a bonus action. The latter keeps your offensive turn intact.
  2. Range > touch. Distance matters. Healing Word has 60 ft range. Cure Wounds has touch.
  3. Sustained healing. Aura of Vitality heals 2d6 per turn for 10 rounds for one 3rd-level slot. That's insane value.
  4. Self-sufficiency for solo play. If you're solo, heal yourself, not just allies.

Best Classes for Healing

Cleric (S-tier)

Best healer. Full caster, access to every healing spell, Life Domain's Disciple of Life adds HP to every heal.

Channel Divinity (Preserve Life at Life Domain) restores 5 x Cleric level HP. At level 10, 50 HP distributed however you want.

Druid (A-tier)

Good healer. Goodberry for emergency healing pool. Cure Wounds and Healing Word via spell list. Healing Spirit (non-SRD) is potentially overpowered.

Bard (A-tier)

Healing Word at any level, Cure Wounds, Mass Healing Word via Magical Secrets. Song of Rest for bonus HP during rests.

Paladin (B+ tier)

Lay on Hands (5 x level HP pool). Cure Wounds. Aura of Vitality (sustained bonus-action healing).

Ranger (B tier)

Cure Wounds, Healing Word. Goodberry. Limited compared to full casters.

Build Template: Life Cleric

Race: Hill Dwarf (+1 Wis + HP per level) or Variant Human.

Class: Cleric, Life Domain.

Stats: STR 14 or DEX 14, CON 14, INT 8, WIS 16, CHA 12.

Equipment: Medium or heavy armor, shield, holy symbol, mace.

Spells prepared (Level 5):

  • Level 1: Cure Wounds, Healing Word, Bless, Guiding Bolt.
  • Level 2: Spiritual Weapon, Aid, Lesser Restoration, Silence.
  • Level 3: Spirit Guardians, Revivify, Mass Healing Word.

Cantrips: Sacred Flame, Guidance, Spare the Dying.

Healing Rotations

Turn 1 (combat starts)

  • Cast Bless on 3 allies (1 minute).

Turn 2

  • Cast Spiritual Weapon as a bonus action. Attack with weapon.

Turn 3

  • Ally drops: cast Healing Word as a bonus action. Attack with weapon.

Between fights

  • Short rest, spend Hit Dice to recover HP.

Long rest

  • Prepare spells fresh for the next day's expected challenges.

Aura of Vitality

Paladin 3rd-level spell. Concentration for 1 minute. Bonus action each turn to heal a target for 2d6.

Over 10 rounds: 20d6 = 70 HP of healing distributed. One 3rd-level slot.

For sustained healing, nothing matches it. Many Paladins prepare this for every boss fight.

Healing in Combat vs. Out of Combat

In combat: Bonus action heals (Healing Word, Aura of Vitality). Revive downed allies. Don't waste actions on minor healing.

Out of combat: Cure Wounds, Prayer of Healing, Goodberry. Prayer of Healing (10-minute cast) mass heals the party efficiently.

Short rests: Bardic Song of Rest, Hit Dice spending. No slots needed.

Solo Healer Play

Solo characters benefit from self-healing:

  • Healing Word on yourself when you drop to 0. Revive yourself.
  • Lay on Hands (Paladin). Free HP from a pool. Best solo healing mechanic.
  • Cure Wounds when you have spare actions.
  • Goodberry as an emergency reserve (10 HP for one slot, lasts 24 hours).

A solo Paladin or Cleric with Healing Word plus Lay on Hands plus other patches can survive encounters that would kill less durable solo classes.

Support Spells

Beyond raw healing, support spells prevent damage:

  • Shield of Faith: +2 AC to an ally.
  • Bless: +1d4 on attacks and saves.
  • Sanctuary: Enemies must save to attack the target.
  • Bane / Cutting Words: Debuff enemies.

A good healer prevents damage before it's dealt.

Final Takeaway

Healers aren't boring. They're the reason the party (or you solo) is still standing. Cleric is the best healer. Bard is the best support. Paladin is the best hybrid.
