D&D Myths Debunked

Common D&D 5e misconceptions debunked. Flanking, meta-gaming, rule quirks, and what's actually RAW.

D&D Myths Debunked

Common misconceptions about D&D 5e, explained.

"Flanking Grants Advantage"

Not RAW. Flanking is an optional rule. By default, it's not in 5e.

Some tables use it. Others don't. The Endlessness doesn't by default.

"Crit Doubles Damage"

Not quite. Crit doubles the damage dice, not the modifiers. A 1d8+3 weapon crits for 2d8+3, not 2(1d8+3) = 2d8+6.

"Natural 1 Auto-Fumbles"

Not RAW. Natural 1 on an attack roll auto-misses. Nothing else happens unless a house rule says so.

"You Can Cast Two Spells Per Turn"

Mostly no. You can cast one leveled spell per turn (via action OR bonus action; not both). Cantrips can combine with bonus action leveled spells only in very specific cases.

"Healing Word Is a Full Action"

No. Healing Word is a bonus action. You still have your full action for attacks or another spell (non-concentration).

"Shield Spell Takes an Action"

No. Shield is a reaction. Triggered when you're hit.

"Rogues Can Sneak Attack Multiple Times Per Turn"

No. Once per turn. You get one Sneak Attack per turn (including opportunity attacks on other creatures' turns).

"Paladins Must Be Lawful Good"

Not since 3.5. 5e Paladins can be any alignment as long as they keep their Oath.

"Wizards Need to Memorize Spells Daily"

Sort of, but. They prepare from their spellbook. They can change preparations on long rest, but the spellbook contains many spells they know.

"Barbarians Can't Wear Armor"

No. They can. They just lose Unarmored Defense benefits.

"You Can Always Take a Potion As a Bonus Action"

Not RAW. Taking a potion is an action. Some house rules allow bonus action.

"Cantrips Deal Double Damage at Level 5"

Yes, but. Damage cantrips scale at levels 5, 11, 17. Not all cantrips deal damage.

"Monks Are Weak"

They've gotten better. Modern Monk with Stunning Strike at level 5 is competitive.

"Wizards Are OP"

At high levels, yes. At low levels, they're fragile. It's a progression curve.

"D&D Is All About Combat"

No. Three pillars: combat, exploration, social. Campaign balance varies.

"AI DM Is Not Real D&D"

False. See our is AI DM real D&D post.

In The Endlessness

Our AI Dungeon Master follows RAW. No custom flanking rules. No house rules unless enabled.

For related reads, our combat rules, action economy, and class guides cover specifics.

Final Takeaway

Know the rules. Don't assume house rules are universal.
